The Spids' Web

Music by AJ Matthews, AKA Spid 4

AJ Matthews records music and songs, plays about with sound software and puts the results on this site for your perusal. He's been known to play gigs on the Truro and Falmouth scenes. So far, he's made music with his voice and a flamenco guitar ~ recently messing with loopers and samplers he's broadened his palette. We should view these as kinds of collage with sound, because he finds that painters and pictures are a pretty useful source of working practice. A song could be a portrait or a landscape, but it's not going to be like a novel.

Use the pictures at the top and bottom to navigate around the site.

There are two pages of music on this site: On the Songs Page you'll find finished and polished numbers that seem like the kind of thing that might one-fine-day make up an album. On the Experiments Page you can experience material that might be less complete, more radical, or just not that great, like a sketch book.

New Song 41/10/2010
Today comes your final installment for now - a new song called Get Real. It's quiet and slow - there's certainly a Low vibe detectable, which is a band I hope you're fans of as much as I am. Now to record some more things while I've got your attention...
New Songs 2 and 31/4/2010
The next two of the four promised songs are now up and both are on the experiments page. Both feature fairly radical processing. The latest version of Blackbird is a recording I'm genuinely proud of, although it has split the critics. Hope you like them. And feedback, why don't you? :~)
A new series of songs and sounds12/17/2009
Hi All, It's been much too long since I updated this site, but I have been working hard on new methodologies, new tools, and new songs. Finally I can start publishing them here, on MySpace, and on Sound Cloud. Essentially I've been training my computer to play along with my music - for the techies amongst you, it's Linux and Pure Data that does it. For the non-techies, it's experimental, but hopefully not impenetrable (and yes, I was sorely tempted). We're looking for new sounds, like Rudy and Spider. I currently have four recordings, which I'll be posting over the next four weeks, so let's call it an EP. And there'll be more in the pipeline. Hope you enjoy it. Peace, etc.
New Song Number 1 - Like Nathan12/17/2009
Having said all that about new methodologies, the first new song is in fact pretty traditional. It's called Like Nathan and it features guitar and vocals. Hardly revolutionary I guess, but there are four vocal parts - I've come to value backing vocals a lot lately, and I hope you can hear my enthusiasm for them. See the Songs page.
